Ergo Phizmiz has produced a mix to celebrate the jubilee of Freddie Mercury and, of course, his own diamond jubilee as Queen Ergo Phizmiz the 1st of England, for the gargantuan behemoth netlabel that is UpItUp Records.

It is called "The Only Union Jack I Want to See is Union Jacques Mix", in homage to UpItUp's own hairy treasure chest Jacques Malchance.

Electronic Music 2001-2006

An emptying of the cupboard, 30 previously unreleased nuggets of electronic music by Ergo Phizmiz spanning five years. From the jazz-sample-collage of "Alethea", to the party-electropop of "Ferret", to the 1920s Broadway hip-hop of "Lazy Bleat's Legs", to the ethereal circus synth waltz of "Trapeze", to the abstract glitch funk sound-poetry adventure of "Arpolage", this is as unique a collection of electronic music as you are likely to find in a month of Sundays. Which would mean a lot of roast dinners with this kaleidoscopic odyssey of blips and bloops as your musique d'ameublement. So there you are.

Put that in your special pipe and smoke it.



Including collaborations with Blank Beats, The Travelling Mongoose, & Martha Moopette. Michael Jackson, Hans Arp and Harpo Marx also rear their lovely heads. Close listeners may also spot a 9 year old Vulnavia Vanity shouting about trousers.

This album was recorded in York, Billingham, Lincoln, Withern, London, Newport, Freshwater, & Ventnor, 2001-2006. Collated and Mastered in Bridport & Withern, 2011-2012.

All the tracks are made by the arranging of sampled and recorded sounds on a timeline. No MIDI was injured in the recording of these pieces.

We present for your delectation a new mini-album, 27 minutes of rhythmic electronic sample music and sound-collage by Ergo Phizmiz.



It is intended, as the title implies, for parties and right royal knees-ups, but can be listened to at your discretion (or indiscretion) in any chosen environment or context.

* (Any of the rare breed of Ergothusiasts may be interested to know this is the first of Ergo's works produced entirely using the taking, juxtaposition and processing of samples in a timeline since 2007, back in the heady days of Phuj Phactory & 1000 Year Mix. Goodness gracious. It must be something they put in the water....)

"M: 1000 Year Mix" - 2010 Remaster

"M: 1000 Year Mix" was composed between 2005-2006. The only Ergo Phizmiz composition created entirely out of samples (excluding works like "Cinemacollages", which he doesn't consider his own compositions in the same way), the work is a hunt for dialogues between the music of diverse times and cultures, from 1000-2000 AD. Not a "mix" in the conventional understanding of the word, samples are treated as raw material to be spliced, reshaped and assimilated, creating new melodies and progressions from tiny fragments of this raw material, exploring the interior of how music works, and how music transforms across geography and the passing of time.



Part One is an exploration of Tonality and Atonality in music. Part Two is on the subject of Noise and Ambience. Part Three is a play with the developments of Technology and their relation to music. Part Four is about the usage of the human voice. Part five about Rhythm. Part six is the final amalgamation, or, if you like, the party at the end.

"M: 1000 Year Mix" is not a piece that professes to give any clear answers to any overriding questions about music. It is, like all of Ergo Phizmiz's works, "playing" music, or "playing with music", exploring with a wink and a cheeky, perhaps slightly lascivious grin the internal mechanisms of how music works.

Like the majority of Ergo Phizmiz's works, it was generally ignored by the mainstream media, though not for the want of press-releases and promos! However, as has become habitual the forward thinking magnificence that is the blogosphere came through, and amongst a myriad other bloggings across the web, the piece was described in this way:

"Imagine a playlist of music spanning a complete millenium, mashed-up and masterfully mixed together so that the listener slides backward and forward through time, almost like a non-linear evolutionary chart of the sonic experience. Those who like a bit of experimentation in their music may find this composition as genius as I did. Kerouac had his "On the Road," Michaelangelo had his "David," and Phizmiz has his "M: 1000." Every artist has his masterpiece." - Jots From The Flipside, 2006

This was supposed to be the beginning of a projected long line of sample-driven works from Ergo. What happened instead was this piece wore out his capacity to create entirely sample based music, and he had no option but to return to other forms of composition.

Cinemacollages : Volume 1

A series of sound-collages on cinema and animation, comprising: "Sounds of Soviet Animation" Volumes 1 & 2 (mixes of sound-design and music from the Soyuzmultfilm Studios), "Betty Boop" (a mix of sounds from the legendary Fleischer animations), "Trnka / Trojan / Novak" (comprising of sound-effects from Jiri Trnka's collaborations with composers), "Laurel & Hardy Ubermash" (a mash-up of various hollerings, clangs, and music from the Hal Roach era L & H films), and "A Fantasia on Jan Svankmajer" (a whistlestop tour of stop-motion and Surrealism).

The pieces included here were originally created for Ergo Phizmiz's Phuj Phactory on WFMU, except "Trnka / Trojan / Novak", which is previously unreleased.

One afternoon Ergo Phizmiz finds himself lumbered into delivering a parcel to the house of legendary alchemist and necromancer Dr Johann Faustus who, since the events of some time ago for which he is renowned, has entered into a rather quieter life in a vast, labyrinthine house, with hundreds of lodgers running the gamut from artists, birds, bird-people, walking fictions, ventriloquists, a Cassowary, running chairs, walking gramophones, and myriad automata.



This enormous dream fable, told through speech, songs, collage and sound-design, is the result of over three years delving down various rabbit-holes, and features collaborations in a range of contexts with artists of many disciplines, including Jack Phoenix, Margita Zalite, Pete Um, Angela Valid, Bela Emerson, Martha Moopette, Amie Willingale, and Zenith Pitts.

In glorious radiophonic technicolour, it is a musical-comedy of disorientation and magick, somewhere between nightmare and the half-remembered childhood whimsy of an insomniac music-hall artiste.

Ergo Phizmiz & The Travelling Mongoose DJ at the Design Museum

The Design Museum, London, features this coming Friday night a Silent Disco collaborative DJ set from Ergo Phizmiz & The Travelling Mongoose, for Care in the Community Recordings, as part of Design Overtime Festival.

The exclusive set will mix the nature and found-sound recordings of The Travelling Mongoose, with instrumental, experimental and furniture music by Ergo Phizmiz created over the past ten years including many new and unreleased pieces, a spot of 78-RPM recordings, and junkshop vinyl.

People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz are pleased to announce the release of a new online-only album, "Rhapsody in Glue".

Following the success of the critically acclaimed "Perpetuum Mobile" CD of 2007, renowned UK collagists / composers People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz reunite for "Rhapsody in Glue", a cycle of bricolage-ballet-music, skewed-waltzes, and skewiff-pop.

There is a story behind every album, and with "Rhapsody in Glue" we find a unique approach to constructing a record. Both long-term contributors to New York radio station WFMU, People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz decided to publicly tear apart their respective practices and create an album "in the open", presenting on a seafood-filled-platter the process of collaborative collage composition - informally discussing and jabbering nonsense to one another, resulting in the "Codpaste" free podcast series. "Rhapsody in Glue" is the culmination of the ideas explored in the podcast series.

"Rhapsody in Glue" continues in the bizarre ballroom vein of their previous efforts together, however,increasing the sonic palette into textural depths previously uncharted in their work. If "Carmic Waltz" is an expressionist painting by aged ballroom dance teacher who's eaten the wrong kind of mushrooms in her soufflŽ, then "Gary's Anatomy" is a slice of pure absurdist pop shot through with slabs of exotica and Ethel Merman. Recurring through the record is an apparent obsession with Prokofiev's "Troika (Sleigh Ride)", which merges and mashes with Burt Bacharach and Queen on "Snow Day", and lapses into pure fantasy on the almost entirely acoustic "Withers in the Whist", jarring with Ergo's strange, Victoriana obsessed lyrics. Then on "Dancing in the Carmen" we discover what happens if Nana Mouskouri is thrown into a pot with Peggy Lee and let simmer for 10 minutes, whilst "In The Waking" shimmers along on multitracked guitars, meandering melodies, and music boxes.

The first release in the Collected Radio Works by Ergo Phizmiz, spanning over 30 hours of experimental radio across sound-collage, spoken-word & radioplays, large-scale instrumental compositions, songs, ambient & furniture music, musique-concrete, installations, and sound-poetry, produced between 2000-2008.

"Ergo Phizmiz's Sticky White Glue, a twelve-part series of sound montages--voices, music, and plunderphonic juxtapositions of the two--reminds us why radio has been described as "schizophonic," packing more disembodied sounds and voices than the ear can process" - Artforum magazine

This series "Sticky White Glue" first aired 2003-2004 on Resonance FM, London, and was repeated 2009 on Soundart Radio, Dartington. Segments of the pieces were also broadcast by Kenny G on WFMU. It is a fanciful play-around with the juxtapositions of instruments & voices with sampling and digital composition, and features as its main protagonists Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy.

And then, blimeyblimey, we are are delighted to also present a permanent archive of "Codpaste" by People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz.

"Codpaste" was a weekly podcast series in which the two artists attempted to compose collage music from the very beginning, in a "work in progress" style, attempting to open up the creative process. The theory is that it is rare to see compositions made from the outset, and usually the audience are only invited in once the piece is finished, done and dusted. These weekly programmes were expanded into a digital-only album entitled “Rhapsody in Glue”.
